i-Mate PDA2K

Last month Mark, Will and I decided to get us some new toys. We each selected a mobile device. Mark got himself a Treo 650 (which would have been my first choice, if I was on Rogers..), Will Just purchased a FlipTop2 and I got the i-Mate PDA2K.

My take on the I-mate

The casing and design are some of the best features of any devices I have seen. The integrated sliding keyboard provide an alternative way to input date other than the pen or on screen keypad. There are also plenty of buttons that can be customized to your liking.

The i-Mate PDA2K has it all:

  • QWERTY keyboard
  • Bluetooth
  • wi-fi
  • GSM-GPRS phone
  • Digital camera (.3 mega pixel)
  • Digital video (640x480)
  • Digital voice recorder

It powered by Window Mobile Second Edition Pocket PC with the MS Pocket Office Suite.

After one month of usage, I really like working with it, but unfortunately it doesn’t perform any one job extremely well. The phone is the weakest of the components, much like a simplified cell, I find it hard to take advantage of the extra features.

The PDA aspect is great thanks to Microsoft’s Window Mobile Second Edition Pocket PC. It is a solid platform to work with especially for Microsoft users who like to access and modify MS documents on the go.

It also come pre-loaded with Skype, it allows you to call out while connected to a wi-fi network making this device one of the best communication tool I have seen. (Phone, emails, skype, SMS, Instant Messages…)

Sadly, priced at around $1099US, the cost makes it less attractive and as a Mac user, I have had my shares of problems setting it up. It’s been hard to sync with my Powerbook; I had to rely on 3rd party software, none of them up-to-date with the new drivers and/or OS X Tiger.

Overall, I would recommend this little wonder if you are a PC user with deep pocket. Everything one needs to stay connected, organized or document an event is included in one device. With 64MB ROM, 128 MB RAM and a SD Slot (I’m using a 1GB card), you will not have any memory problems whether you run your business on the go or an avid citizen Journalist.
